The famed artisanal delicacies are just part of the treat... Now Al Samadi offers a tempting menu of Lebanese-style sandwiches, salads, soups, mezzeh and saj, as well as breakfast and snacks. Brunch every Friday from 10am to 3pm. OUR STORYThe Al Samadi story began in Beirut in 1872 with the establishment of the first sweet shop in bustling, cosmpolitan Beirut. At the time, the city was awash in French and other European cultural influences, creating an atmosphere of exoticism and intrigue. Café society was at its best and the fashionable inhabitants of the city, liked nothing more than to enjoy an aromatic French or Arabic coffee and a delightful Lebanese knaffeh...or a leisurely afternoon tea with a plate of nutty, flaky baklava. Al Samadi Sweets have always sat comfortably straddling the Eastern and Western worlds. In 1982, Al Samadi opened its first sweet shop in Dubai. And most recently, it was decided that this rich, heritage brand should come to life in a decidedly retro café and sweet shop in the heart of Dubai. Al Samadi has always been a respected and well-known brand among Arabs - primarily because the Al Samadi’s confectionary team, never cut corners and continued to hand-craft Baklava exactly as it was done over a century ago.
ARTISANAL SWEETSEach Al Samadi treat is delightfully handmade and only contain whole, hand-chosen nuts. Our sweets do not fit a mould and may vary in shape and size as they are not produced through machine automation – each piece is carefully handcrafted, with passion and soul, with… authenticity in every bite. Storage and careAl Samadi sweets are so delicious, they usually do not stay around long! But if you would like to save some of your pleasures here are some tips: - Baklava and other dry goods should be kept at room temperature away from heat, sun and light. Keep the tin box tightly closed after each nibble. If well kept, sweets can be kept fresh but should be consumed within one month. - Pastries and sweets with Ashta or Cheese, such as Knaffa, must be refrigerated and eaten within 24 hours. The CaféAl Samadi originally stemmed from a period in Lebanon that was prosperous, cosmopolitan and heavily influenced by the French. Beirut was a cross-cultural city dotted with cafes and frequented by world travellers. At its new flagship location in Downtown Burj Khalifa, Dubai, the 138-year old brand has been refreshed, but the look is still authentic and playful, evoking a bygone age of Franco-Lebanese charm. Al Samadi Sweet Shop & Café offers the artisanal sweets that are its namesake, but also a delightful all-day menu of soups, salads, sandwiches, mezzeh and Saj, as well as luscious desserts. The culinary team worked to create a menu that combines the best of Lebanese and French café cuisine. THE HISTORY OF BAKLAVAIt is believed that the Assyrians in the 8th century BC were the first people in eastern Mediterranean that baked a mixture of chopped nuts and honey with dough, thus creating the predecessor to baklava. The seafaring Greek traders soon discovered the delicacy and brought it back to Greece. The Greeks further refined Baklava by developing methods to roll the dough very thinly in order to have a flaky texture with many layers of nuts and honey. In fact, because they rolled the dough as thin as a leaf, the dough was referred to as “Phyllo”, Greek for leaf - a word used globally today. Only the rich could afford to have their servants prepare Baklava and it was a particular treat on special occasions. The delicacy spread far and wide and by the 3rd Century BC various local adaptations were made to enhance the sweet across cultures: Armenians added cinnamon and clove, while Arabs added rose water and cardamon. The word baklava itself is derived from an Arabic word for nuts. The Sultans of Turkey prized Baklava so much, they placed exorbitant prices on Baklava or Baklava ingredients to ensure its ultra-exclusivity to mainly the royal class. A Turkish expression, commonly used until today is "I am not rich enough to eat baklava and börek every day." It was at the Sultan’s Palace that Baklava came to the attention of Marie Antoinette’s former pastry chef, Monsieur Guillaume. The famed Chef Patissierie added a dainty French touch in terms of presentation and modelling of individual pieces of the sweet, flaky treat.
